Service to Minors

An underage person may legally possess and consume alcoholic beverages, provided they are not on licensed premises and the alcohol is supplied by their parent, legal guardian, or spouse who is over the age of 21. (AS § 04.16.051(b))

Employment of Minors

Minors aged 18, 19, and 20 may work on the licensed premises of hotels and restaurants, but they are prohibited from selling, serving, or delivering alcoholic beverages. Minors aged 16 and 17 may be employed at a licensed establishment designated as a "bona fide restaurant" by the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board. To do so, they must have written consent from their parent or legal guardian, an exemption certificate from the Department of Labor, and may only be permitted to bus tables. These minors are also prohibited from selling, serving, or delivering alcoholic beverages.

State Training Program:

Alaska's alcohol beverage training program is designed to ensure that servers, supervisors, and security personnel in licensed businesses fully understand the laws and regulations surrounding the service of alcohol. The program provides a comprehensive overview of alcohol law, including how to identify intoxication and prevent drunkenness. It also teaches proper techniques for checking identification, handling difficult situations, and employing strategies to protect guests, employers, and the servers themselves. The training is required for all individuals involved in the service of alcohol, including servers, supervisors of servers, security personnel in licensed businesses, and licensees, regardless of how directly they are involved in the business.
