We're not lawyers—just friendly helpers! 🍻 This document isn’t intended to serve as legal advice. Alcohol laws are like recipes—every city, county, and state has its own unique regulations. For the most accurate guidance on local rules, reach out to your state liquor control board (they're the real experts here). While Certivance provides resources and keeps an eye on state-level regulations, always double-check with your local authorities—because even the best need a second opinion! 😉

State Training Program:

In Washington State, the Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST) program is a vital component of the state's efforts to promote responsible alcohol service. This program mandates that all employees involved in the sale or service of alcohol obtain a MAST permit within 60 days of their hire date. The training, which requires a commitment of three hours, is designed to equip staff with essential knowledge and skills to responsibly serve alcohol. Upon successful completion, employees receive a certificate valid for five years.

The MAST program offers two types of permits:

  • Class 12 Permit: For individuals aged 21 and older.

  • Class 13 Permit: For individuals aged 18 to 20.

These permits are obtained by completing a training course provided by third-party, private course providers certified by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB). Training classes are available both online and in classroom settings, offering flexibility to accommodate various learning preferences.

In addition to MAST, Washington State offers the Responsible Vendor Program (RVP), a free, voluntary, and self-monitoring initiative for alcohol retailers, including spirits retailers, grocery stores, and beer and wine specialty shops. The RVP is designed to help these establishments implement best practices for responsible alcohol sales, contributing to public safety and community well-being.

By participating in the MAST program and the RVP, establishments demonstrate a commitment to responsible alcohol service, which can be beneficial in mitigating potential penalties in the event of a violation.
